When I first started swap-bot in 2009, I remember seeing a number of Whimsy Jar swaps. Looking now, I'm not finding any. So I'll just host one of my own. =) So what is a whimsy jar? Whimsy jars put a new spin on traditional gift baskets and grab bags. The idea is to fill a jar with as many little treasures as you can that the recipient will enjoy. Search for whimsy jars on Flickr to get some great examples Fill a 12oz or 16oz jar with as many DIFFERENT Winter/Christmas goodies as you can. Decorate the jar, or just the lid (I like to see into my jars). Send your swap on time Be Nice and Have Fun OPTIONAL - check out your partner's profile, and sneak in some personal goodies. Maybe this will get you a Heart? You never know. I will check all profiles, and reserve the right to remove anyone I feel is iffy.

Does the jar have to be glass?

No it does not have to be glass... just so long as it's about 12oz to 16oz in size. Think Jelly jar or Pint canning jar.
