Description:

For this swap you will create an I Spy Jar. You will take a small jar , clean it and remove the label. Some jar suggestions- an empty parm cheese jar, an empty spice jar, an empty peanut butter jar, or similar sized container. These need to have a wide mouth lid, and be smaller than a mason jar. After it is cleaned and dried you will fill it with colored rice, colored lentils or some other filler. You will also add 15-20 small items. The smaller the items, the more you will want to add. ****This has been edited from 20-30. I made a jar over the weekend and 20 is the upper limit of what you will want. *******The minimum is 15. These can include:

A button

A penny

A paperclip

Small figurines

Shaped flat buttons

Marbles

Laminated photos or stickers

Keep In mind that pom-poms and fabric do not work well for this type of project. You will want a variety for this project. Do not for example add 25 buttons and call it done. It can be a lot of fun to use a certain theme for your bottle. ABC, Animal, Color, Shapes, etc...are all possibilities, or you can create your own theme.

After picking out your items, you will make a "I Spy List" to go along with the bottle. This can be as simple as a check-offable list or it can actually have photos of the objects you have included. Make it as detailed as possible if you do not include photos. Laminate your list, either using a laminator or packing tape. Add the items to your bottle, shake the items into the filler, and then super glue the lid on. Please do not skip this step or use a different glue. We want these to be safe for kids.

There are many sites online that will give you some inspiration, but I liked the photos on this one: http://countingcoconuts.blogspot.com/2011/02/homemade-i-spy-bottles-tutorial.html

For this swap you will have one partner, and will make an I Spy Jar and card to go along with it. These are not profile based or age based, so I would suggest getting started after you sign up and then being able to ship out soon after partners are assigned. Minimum rating is 4.9. I will be checking profiles. Please post below which child you would like this sent to.

If this swap goes well I would like to do a series of these. It should be a lot of fun. PM me if you have any questions. This is my first group swap, so if I am doing something wrong please let me know. I will angel is someone flakes, but I am counting on all you awesome group members to take care of your own swap. :)

I'm already signed up for two whimsey jar projects or I would join this one. Great idea.

Well, if you have some little odds and ends and some energy when you are done with those, these little jars are pretty quick and easy to make. The list is probably the most time consuming part of it. :) And if you miss this one, hopefully we will have a series of them, so you can catch the next one.

My son has some delays and doesn't read yet so a picture list would be best for him.

I went looking for buttons and other things to "spy" today and got a lot of ideas for both boys and girls. I'm excited.

I found the BEST buttons at Hobby Lobby yesterday for this. I am so excited. Getting it put together today as soon as my rice dries

I have made these a few times including in my sons kindergarten class, he is now in 4th grade.

Does the filler have to be multi colored?

Faun00 02/ 7/2012 #

Sorry one more question, is there a minimum or maximum size to the bottle and can we add more then 20 items?

julierachelliz 02/ 7/2012 #

The filler does not have to be colored, no minimum size but no bigger than a mason jar and if you have room you can add more than 20 items. :)

julierachelliz 02/ 7/2012 #

The one I made was in a gatorade bottle and I added 21 items. It quite filled up the jar as far as items. I would think the # of items would be really hinging on the size and shape of your container. I am still new to this type of craft, so I appreciate you all bearing with me. :)

My son, David and I just finished our "I Spy" jar. I posted pictures on flickr. If anybody wants to take a peek the link is on my profile. By the way, the filler in ours is recycled filler from a glade car sachet.

My son, David will be the person to receive this swap.

We used Gatorade jars when we did it in my son's class.

julierachelliz 02/ 8/2012 #

Maybe the items I used were too big? Yours looks great dragon86

@julierachelliz Thank you. I can't wait to exchange jars. I'm excited to see what other's came up with.

I have my rice multi-colored and the container ready and just have to get the items to put in it and then viola! done, lol. Really love making this. We should definitely do a series of different themes of these. I made sure I kept the rice coloring job for just me so food coloring wouldn't end up all over the place in the kitchen, lol. The boys are excited to pick out things to put in the container though.

julierachelliz 02/15/2012 #

i wouldnt use macaroni. it needs to be smaller and something heavy. so rice works, barley, you could use pepi de acini i would think. Confetti would not work, as the items would sink and macaroni would be too big.
