Description:

I am in a public swap like this hosted by @Pouffia (who graciously gave permission for me to host it in PD.) I have had a lot of fun with it....so much fun that I want to do more and hope some of you do too!

The idea is to take a page from an old dictionary, I found a perfect one at a used book store for $2. (You could use a newer dictionary also or even a copy of a dictionary page, just "age" it a little.) The page should be no smaller than 5 x 7 and no larger than 9 x 7.I think these dimensions will fit nicely into most books that folks might use, mine is 9 x 7. You highlight one word on the page- in this case a word begnning with the letter "A"- and then decorate the page. It does not have to be a picture of something that begins with an A, as you can see from my example, the word I chose was "ancestor" and then I used a vintage photo of some children in a family.

I took a composition book and decorated the front cover to use as my altered dictionary. I am saving several pages for each letter so I can have several pages from others for each letter. I paste in the pages I get from others. When I make a page, I make two...one for my partner and one for myself. When it is finished I will have a nice altered dictionary with my own art and art from others. Instead of creating an entire altered dictionary, you might just want to insert your pages into a Smash book or art journal.

In order to get through the alphabet in a reasonable amount of time, we would need to do 2 letter pages a month but they really are pretty quick to do and very inexpensive to mail.

Altered Dictionary Cover

Joining one or a few doesn't commit you to the whole alphabet but I hope we have at least a few who want to stick it out through the whole alphabet! I have found that creating a page like this is a great "warm-up" exercise and gets my creativity going.

If I have been clear as mud or left something out, please let me know or ask a question below. Thanks and come make an Altered Dictionary with me! (I am putting in another copy of my A page because the above photo is too small.)

can we use a dictionary in our own language?

Ky 08/29/2013 #

@heritagedecouleurs Yes! I think that would be terrific!

Do you mount the dictionary page onto another piece of paper/cardstock before you do your art on it to make it stiffer? I mean before it is glued into the journal. Or do you find that it works to just work on the thinner dictionary page? Plus I assume we need to send them flat not folded?

Ky 09/ 1/2013 #

Yes, please send flat, I use a piece of cardboard in the envelope. I have removed some of the pages from my altered dictionary (composition book :-) and then glued two pages together and add the dictionary page to those and it is quite sturdy. I think if we want another piece of paper added to it we could do it ourselves.

Unless....some dictionary pages are very thin so I think if you need to add another page to the back so you can work on it, go ahead!
