Description:

I have been giving it some thought as to what else might we make with all those bottle caps. Well, it won’t be long now before it is Halloween. And when I think of Halloween, as in all holidays, I think of decorating the house for the occasion. And I think garland is always a fun decoration to use.

How about creating garland out of some of those bottle caps? I figure 12 bottle caps decorated and strung together would do nicely. The caps can be flattened or left in their true state. They can be painted or not. Think pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns, black cats, witches, bats, rats, eyeballs, skeletons, etc. String them together with ribbon, cord, or maybe twine.

In this swap we will have 1 partner and for that partner we will decorate 12 bottle caps (or more) and string them together creating a Halloween garland.

To take part in this swap you must belong to Altered Bottle Caps group and you must have a 4.9 rating or better. This swap will be closed to those who have 1 or more "no sends" with in the past 3 months of the start of this swap. Newbies are welcome as long as you have been rated for 3 mailed swaps before the start of this swap. I reserve the right to ban anyone for any good reason so as to insure all participants should have a happy swap experience.

Please give thought and time to your creations and send that which you would absolutely love to receive. Remember, what you send is a reflection of you.

Above all be creative and have FUN!

Okay, Robin...I need to know what to string these on. I have the bottle caps in process...but I'm trying to decide what to use for the "garland" part of it. Would some orange and/or black garland work or were you thinking of something nicer? Help!!

Hi Vicki....

I was thinking we might tie them onto some skinny orange and / or black ribbon......or you could use other colors like purple and orange, maybe loosely braided, or just one color, or 3, or even that coarse brown packaging twine? I think that could give it a fun look. One might want to add some small store-bought Halloween charms / items in with the caps. The only mandatory is that it be 12 caps decorated and strung together..........oh, and that you must have fun creating it. :-)

You say something nicer than garland.....when I think garland, I think of the store-bought glass beads. I suppose if you were really looking for a heart you could incorporate your caps into / onto a nice garland.

Oh.......maybe you mean that polystyrene garland of pumpkins and cats? Hmmm......you could use that, but it isn't very strong. You might want to string your caps and then work that into it.

These are just some thoughts.....I'm leaving the materials and construction up to the participants of this swap.......anything goes....well, as long as it's in good taste. And it is supposed to be garland, so the caps should be strung a distance apart, not clumped up in the center of the garland strand.

Also.....one could punch a hole on both sides of the cap and string them along or they could punch one hole in the top (as you would for a pendent) and let them hang from the strand.

It's your call. :-)

How long should the finnised garland be?

Robin 08/ 6/2008 #

Hi alleycat....

Well, that all depends upon how many bottle caps you use and how far apartyou space them.

You are to create 12 caps.......you can make more.

Let us say you make the required 12 and you space them 3 inches apart. Then I should think that the end result would be about 33 inches of bottle cap decoration plus about 4 inches (at least) of trailing garland strand on each end. This would bring the complete product (including the trailing strands) to about 42 inches long.

I wouldn't space them further apart unless you plan to incorporate other items in between the caps. It would look sparse if you were to space them further apart without anything in between the caps.

Okay..so here's what I'm doing. I'm using black chain..the big loop kind. Then I'm adding bottle caps and some ribbons on each end. Ohhh wait, maybe I will lace the ribbon through the chain loops!! Hmmm...definitely a work in progress....

If you are having trouble with how to string your cap onto the garland.....

Try punching 1 hole into each cap and place a jump ring on them. Then string your caps, spacing them apart and tying them in place using the strand on which you string them. You can then weave this strand in with other strands.
