Here's a graphic of a completed ATC:

Some people have asked if this must be a heart and I am asking that for this swap - it should be a heart. I would like to keep to the theme of Valentines Day (Month) - Thanks!

I've found a new technique that is very easy to do and looks fabulous! It's called Iris Folding and looks almost like quilting with paper. It's called Iris Folding because the final product looks like a camera shutter (the stutter is called the iris of the camera, thus "Iris Folding") might look.

http://www.irisfolding.circleofcrafters.com/irisfoldingheart.html - video of instructions for heart iris folding and free heart pattern. Please reduce the pattern 65% so that it will fit on an ATC aligned Landscape.

I decided that this swap would be for Feb as a birthday present to myself and because Feb is Valentines day. :-)

Standard rules apply. You will make one ATC for 2 partners. ATCs must be 2.5" x 3.5". The medium is the Iris fold. Please make the back of your card very sturdy to support the Iris Fold and be sure to sign the back with your name, Title of swap and date made.

Most of all: Have fun! And don't flake! Though I am sure you won't.

This looks neat! Just to clarify - we don't have to do a heart, do we? We can use any iris folding pattern? (although a heart is seasonally appropriate for February!)

I too want to know if it has to be a heart ? There are so many other shapes to choose from..

Kimbeewa 01/12/2009 #

I made mine this weekend and did not use a heart. Hope that's okay.

I'd like it to be a heart since it is Valentine's Month. The heart is the easiest to make and looks quite nice when completed. So yes, I'm asking that this be a heart.

:-)

I originally didn't make a heart. However, I can use it for another swap. No harm, no foul. Hearts are fun! Thanks for a doing new technique swap.

Can you tell me how you can reduce the heart by 65%. Thanks.

BastCrystal 01/29/2009 #

Evie: If you make a photo copy, reduce it to 65%. If you don't have a copier that you can use, make a heart that fits onto an atc in the landscape position (the long edge, vs the tall short edge) and trace the lines from the pattern onto it. Then cut out the heart and place your cut out ATC on top (upside down) of the heart and, then place your papers in the pattern order.

I hope that helps :-) Please feel free to PM me if you have more questions.

I am totally addicted! I sat down to make these the other evening, and before I knew it, I had 4 cards done! Now I am off to find other shapes!

Cool Chimerix: That's how I felt when I found this technique. That's why I wanted to share it. :-) Do you have Flickr? A way to scan them? I'd love to see what you've done.

Hey BastCrystal, I do have flicker for my ATC's (link in my profile). I just uploaded the Hearts, and have "Moths" I need to take pics of them and get them up too. I made the moths for a brown paper bag ATC swap.

I like Iris Folding and have several books with patterns. So looking for to the challenge of doing one small enough to fit on an ATC.

BastCrystal 02/ 3/2009 #

@chimerix - I'll check out your pics - they sound great :-) @SallySparrow - I just discovered this recently and have fallen in love with it. - I look forward to doing more patterns reduced for ATCs. I just love the look. :-)
