Description:

Patchwork quilt blocks don't get much easier than the Friendship Star. But simple doesn't mean boring when you choose beautiful fabrics.

As for this swap: Swapper Requirements - 4.0 score or above, Newbies just contact me.

Swap Requirements - This finished block (when you sew them ALL together) is 12 inches, so what you are turning in is 12.5 inches. The fabric choice is yours, but the center fabric should be light and the background fabric should be dark. If your swap partner has not listed their preferences below, it would be kind to consult with your swap partner to find out what they like and don't like.

Square directions below:

Background Fabric - Cut 8 squares 4.5 inches (you will need 4 for the Half-Square Triangles - HST)

Star Fabric - Cut 5 squares 4.5 inches (you will need 4 for the HST)

To make the Half-Square Triangles (easiest method) place right sides together, make a LIGHT pencil mark from one corner to the other and stich along the line, then trim 1/4 inch from the stiched line and press open. Voila!

NOTE: Please pay attention to "which way" your star is turning.

More pictures are on my blog (this swap link) or you can contact me for more help if needed.

Cheers, and happy swapping.

I'm just learning patchwork, hope this will be all right with my partner. I've made a couple of blocks so far that turned out OK.

Check out my profile for colors that I like. Anything from that list would be great.

has any one completed this block outs came out 12 inches not 12.5 help

missychrissy 01/24/2009 #

I've done 3 so far (only started patchwork on 10th Jan) and each of them comes out to 12 and a quarter inches... comes with practice I suppose. I'll get this one to 12.5 inches if I have to make 10 of the things!

You have to cut the squares for the half-square triangles - 4 7/8 " not 4.5" , so that whan you sew them to a square they will end up beiing 4.5"

oh! thanx for the info!!! I was wondering...and does anyone have a tip on how to make the point of the star that touches the center of the star come exactly to the corner?

Why haven't partners been assigned yet? dk

missychrissy 01/25/2009 #

Yes, I was wondering that too - GordonGirl hasn't logged on since the 22nd...

@asinka I was lying in bed this morning thinking about that sizing, and then I remembered that the squares that have the triangle in have to be 4 7/8" not 4 1/2". I was going to mention it on here but you've beaten me to it!

@anrtist don't quite understand your question. But I'll talk you through it. For the square that has the 2 colours: cut one square 4 7/8" out of each colour. Lay them right sides together, and draw a line diagonally from top left corner to bottom right, marking in pencil. Sew 1/4" in from that line on both sides of the line, then when you've done that, cut along the pencil line. Fold out, and voila, you should have a 2 coloured triangle square. You will need 4 of these, so that is 2 x 4 7/8" squares of each colour. Cut in half, will make 4 two-colour squares.

If you get stuck PM me and I'll try and explain it a bit better

If we don't get partners I am going to have to try and bow out.. I have a lot on my plate and had hoped to make my block this weekend so that I could send it out.. I don't want to make it until I know who my partner is so that I can do the colors they like... Hmmm dk

missychrissy 01/25/2009 #

Maybe just drop from it while you can. I've just gone to her website and left a comment - she was on there yesterday so I hope she doesn't mind that I've gone there to remind her about partners for this swap. I was hoping to get mine done this weekend too, but we've got until the 12th Feb to send it out. I'm waiting to see who my partner is too before I make it. I've got tons of fabric and could make one, but it would probably be in my partner's most hated colours!

Ok, I'm sorry for the stress I caused everyone. DeenaKate, thank you for hanging in there!

Also, there is some confusion about my directions. The directions MissyChrissy gave work perfectly well. If you cut a 4 7/8" square, draw a line and stitch 1/4" from that line you will get the perfect size half square triangle.

If you follow my directions, cut a 4.5" square, draw the line from one corner to the other and STITCH ON THE LINE. Then you will get the perfect size Half Square Triangle

Thanks GordonGirl, can't wait to get started on this. I prefer the directions I gave because I haven't learnt how to stitch 2 triangles together yet to make a perfect square! Looking forward to getting mine...
