Altered book definition Altered books have been defined as “any book, old or new that has been recycled by creative means into a work of art.” The first time I saw an example of this intriguing art form, it immediately sparked my interest. Here was an opportunity to use the text of books, old and new, to inspire you. Heck!! What are Altered Books, Anyway?! You're going to love this... Altered Books are books that have been given a new life in the form of art. Be they old delapitated books or new ones, their covers and pages can be altered in many ways. You can paint them, cut, fold, burn, sew, collage, tear, drill, glue or adorn them in any way your imagination sees fit. I've been told I have a vivid imagination so anything goes!! As an avid altered art and mixed media artist, I'm always looking for new ideas. For ever it seems I am on the look out to break through a creative block. And of course, like you, I'm perpetually looking for new materials and techniques. Consider your theme when picking a book. You might be able to incorporate the book title as part of your theme. I personally don’t like to work with a book that has lots of photos or pictures in it. I have a tendency to remove pages with pictures. I find pictures and photos distracting and feel like I have to incorporate them in my layout. Check to make sure you don’t have a first edition or a rare out of print copy. How to make an altered book An art journal that has non-precious papers is kind of made to mess up, and I will not hesitate to fill it with everything I want, even junk mail collages etc. That freedom is very important to me.I add lots of layers of paper collage and paint, and sometimes items like brads, paper clips and cardboard bits etc that adds to the book, so don’t be afraid to tear out a lot of the pages. It will ensure that the book will keep looking like a book a few months from now. When you’ve thinned out the book it’s time to start using it and make your marks on the pages. There are a whole slew of fun things to do to text book pages! You can play with the text and highlight words, draw on top of other illustrations or alter the illustrations for example. The only limit is your imagination. Just open the book and start playing! Have fun everyone!! Newbies welcome to join but nrebies must have a well rounded filled out profile! Thanks |
