A Character Zine

Dear Ladies,

Let us create a little booklet all about our character. Our booklet shall take on the form of a zine. For those of you not familiar with this formant, a zine is a small booklet artfully folded from one sheet of copy paper into an eight page book. They are often fanzines, dedicated to a fictional hero, or a current topic of interest expanded upon. For our swap, instead of using a regular sheet of copy paper (8 ½ x 11’’) we shall use a 12’’ x 12’’ sheet of craft paper to fold into our character zine to give us a bit more space to work with. We will be filling the pages so that our partner may get a distinct idea of who our character is.

Please follow this format:

Cover: Decorate your cover however you like, in any medium.

Page 1: Introduce your character, telling where she lives and her family, i.e. husband, children and grandchildren.

Page 2: Put an image of your character on this page. This may be a silhouette or painting from our era you have found on line that you think resembles your character, or a photo of a celebrity you think may look as your character does. You may also draw or paint your character’s likeness from your imagination.

Page 3: What are your character’s favourite things, whether it is food, hobbies, pastimes, even favourite colour.

Page 4: Show something your character has created: a sketch, a collage, a pretty pattern intended for an embroidery project, or even a drawing of a gown she intends to make.

Page 5: Talk about your character’s home, how many rooms, what flowers in the garden, a favourite place to sit or work, or anything else you would like to highlight.

Page 6: This is a free page to put anything you like about your character.

Back cover: You may decorate this however you like.

To be specific, you will create one zine for your partner from a 12’’ x 12’’ piece of craft paper. Following the guide above to fill the pages, be as creative as you like, draw, paint, collage to your heart’s content, just have fun. I have given extra time to work on this swap so you may take your time in its creation. Below are two links for inspiration.
