Description:

Welcome to our second letter-writing swap here at MM&L! I've noticed that our members are quite diverse, and seem to have an equally diverse set of beliefs. In this letter, we will share about our spirituality, religion, or belief system.

In one letter to one partner, write out as much as you'd like about your beliefs, spiritual practices, guiding philosophies, etc. If you don't consider yourself a spiritual person, you're more than welcome to participate! You just need to articulate your worldview/philosophy/moral framework.

Here are some questions to think about when writing your letter, though you do not need to answer all of them:

  • Do you follow a religion or a practice with a name? What terms are used to describe it? Make sure you define anything your partner may not know.

  • Are you theistic or nontheistic? What god or gods/goddesses do you believe in, or do you believe that the divine is something else entirely? What about other entities?

  • What do you consider to be the important moral principles in life? How important do you think it is to follow them?

  • Do you pray? Do rituals? Practice a sacred art? Explain what it's like.

  • Are there any sacred texts that influenced you? What about other books or pieces of writing?

  • Was there any kind of initiation process for your practice?

  • Do you practice alone or with a group? An official church?

  • Are there any calendar dates of significance to you? Certain days of the week? Moon phases?

  • What are some things that you hold to be truth that may not initially seem spiritual?

  • What led you to the path you are currently on? Did you explore other religions or belief systems in the past?

  • Do you feel like you are still finding your path? What are some things that you feel are unaddressed by your worldview? Are there any belief systems or practices you are interested in exploring?

  • Has your life benefited from holding your beliefs? Have they benefited the lives of others?

NOTE: Some people's answers may contain content about drugs, sex, and other topics that could be offensive or unsettling. Please respect what others have chosen to share with you.

Swap Rules

  • 1 letter to 1 partner -- please make it a minimum of one handwritten page (please be neat!), or around one page typed/double spaced. Use stationery or otherwise decorate the paper to make it pretty/add visual interest. Add a bit of pizazz to the envelope as well, even if it's just some stickers or washi.

  • Do not intentionally write large or use small paper to meet the requirements. If you cannot easily articulate this much about your beliefs, this may not be the swap for you! However, feel free to use the space to genuinely articulate areas that trip you up or places where you feel stuck. You are more than welcome to write more than a page!

  • Extras not required, but ok to send. Please keep the letter flat and under an ounce so one stamp will send it!

  • Send by the deadline, rate promptly and fairly when you receive (5 if it meets requirements, heart if you love it). If you are going to be late, please message me AND your partner. I will angel if the swap is not marked as sent 2 weeks after deadline, or after 6 weeks of not receiving anything if your partner is non-communicative.

  • Any questions should be DMed to me so that I can see them and reply in a timely fashion.

Have fun and happy swapping!
