Whats a tip in?

Tip-ins come from archaic printing where they used to glue color plates/photos into a book by putting glue on the edge and tipping it into the valley of the binding, or just attaching the edge's tip onto the page. Today the word is used in Altered books and other handmade books for pages that are created outside the book and attached by some binding method. One way is to tear pages out of a book that's being altered, leaving 1/2" and applying glue to both sides of your tipin on the left edge then slipping that in between the page stubs. Another is to merely glue the back of the page down onto a prepared page in the altered book. Others, like this project leave 1/2" to punch or drill holes and bind with cords or ribbons into a "chunky book" or "fat book" Google Images of either of those two terms for pictures.
