material world

This swap is a follow-up to the Hungry Planet swap that recently took place. This one's based on another of Peter Menzel's books: Material World. The author traveled around the world, photographing families with all their worldly possessions spread out in one large portrait. The differences in the families' belongings was stark: from a few pots, to a deluxe home filled with all the latest appliances. You can read more about the book in this PBS story.

In this swap, we'll each create our own miniature "Material World" portrait. Of course, it's not feasible to take a photo of everything we own...but we can photograph every item we purchase in one day. Include everything from one particular date...food, clothes, a car...anything! Include it all in one big portrait if you can, but if not take individual photos.

Print the photos (on glossy paper if you have it), and on the back of each include some information about the associated item. Was it something you buy often? What country was it made in? How much did it cost? How many of these do you already have?

The Hungry Planet swap was a lot of fun, and I hope you all enjoy this one too! This is an international swap. If you don't have a feedback score yet, please email before signing up.

Here's a guy who did his own "Material World" photo, except he photographed only his technology: http://waderoush.typepad.com/twr/2005/04/mydigitalworl.html#more

i have extended the deadline for the swap...hope this is ok with everyone!

I actually took my photos! Maybe I'll try and add another day of purchases or just take some pictures of my "stuff"...

Wow, great idea - still pondering whether I'm going to sign up - but would encourage everyone to check out the book that was referenced. I've owned "Material World" for several years - got it to try to teach my kids to be more globally minded - and have shared it with many others. GREAT book - and great swap idea :0)

i had fun laying everything out and taking my photos. i'm keeping the packaging from the things i bought so that i can make a little book to contain the photos and other items.

I have to drop out :-( My camera is not working. Something went wrong when it was shipped back to me after leaving it in another state. I don't like the disposable cameras at all (used one for the What I Ate swap because my camera hadn't gotten back to me then) and I can't splurge on a new camera right now.
