This will be the first collection for this swap. A swap for this will be created every 3 months until the final due date of June 2012 (total of 7 swaps). Because the final collection date is so far away, it is easier on the Museum to get small batches of butterflies months ahead of time.

SWAP: You will create 1 butterfly. You will ONLY EMAIL a photo of your butterfly to your partner. Send the actual butterfly to the museum with info they requested to the address below.

**Please abide by the guidelines below from the museum regarding your project(s).*

Information below can be found on this website: http://www.hmh.org/ed_butterfly1.shtml

1,500,000 innocent children perished in the Holocaust. In an effort to remember them, Holocaust Museum Houston is collecting 1.5 million handmade butterflies.

The butterflies will eventually comprise a breath-taking exhibition, currently scheduled for Spring 2013, for all to remember. The Museum has already collected an estimated 400,000 butterflies.

Please facilitate the “I Never Saw Another Butterfly” activity and create as many handmade arts-and-crafts butterflies as possible. This project may be completed by all ages as individuals or groups.

• Butterflies should be no larger than 8 inches by 10 inches.

• Butterflies may be of any medium the artist chooses, but two-dimensional submissions are preferred.

• Glitter and all glitter-related products should not be used.

• Food products (cereal, macaroni, candy, marshmallows or other perishables) also should not be used.

• If possible, e-mail a photograph of your butterflies, to butterflyproject@hmh.org.

Please send or bring your butterflies to the Museum with the following information included:

• Your name,

• Your organization (Swap-bot Butterfly Project Swap),

• Your address,

• Your e-mail address, and

• The total number of butterflies sent.

Mail or bring your butterflies to: Holocaust Museum Houston Butterfly Project Education Department 5401 Caroline St. Houston, TX 77004 USA

uber cool

thanks! My local craft group is participating in this, so I figured, why not share the knowledge of it with my 'other' crafty friends!! :)

GoingTwinsane 08/10/2010 #

Um....so how exactly does this work as far as a swap goes? What are we sending to our partners?

bettflow09 08/10/2010 #

I think this is a great idea!!! I am wondering the same thing @GoingTwinsane . How will this work? Do we take pictures and send to our partner and then send the butterflies to the museum? How many butterflies are we expected to make to complete this swap? I'm kinda confused right now....can you tell? lol

HollyHox 08/10/2010 #

By putting a number of partners in your info, won't swap bot automatically assign partners? this makes it confusing. perhaps you should make it one partner and have us send a butterfly to our assigned partner and ALSO send butterflies to the museum seperately, that way it makes it a partner swap and we can send our charity butterflies to the museum also. Hope that makes sense.

Just a suggestion as I see others wondring how the swap comes into it ... ... ... for other charity type swaps usually we make / craft / purchase what ever is needed and send that straight to the charity. Then to our partners we would send pictures of our creation as well as a letter telling them about why we chose this swap - what it means to us - how we created, etc. Hope that helps :0)

leecytx 08/10/2010 #

Thanks for all the input. I guess it made sense in my head, but with sb assigned partners is where it kinda was confusing to me. @browniemommie - I think that idea of sending only photo to your sb partner is what I'm reallly looking towards since I was trying to get ALL the butterflies made for this swap to the museum. So should I change it to make onlly 1 butterfly + send photo of your 1 butterfly to partner + send actual butterfly to museum with info they requested ?

I think this is a great idea! Here is where you will find the submission form (PDF): http://www.hmh.org/uploads/education/Butterfly%20Project%20Flyer.PDF

If we wanted to send a butterfly (not just a photo) to our partner can we?? I mean, I will be making more than one or two or three for the museum, but it wouldnt take anything away from the museum to make one for my partner would it?

leecytx 08/11/2010 #

@ncfriend if you would like to send your partner one as well, that is fine, but that would be up to you, not a requirement for the swap.

Thanks for posting that form @SamBuck

GoingTwinsane 08/18/2010 #

I think that would work fine @leecytx Make a butterfly, take a pic of it, send the pic to your partner (snail or email?) and snail mail the butterfly to the museum.

What an awesome project and how wonderful of you to share. I'll watch the swap and I hope there is great success. I have downloaded the forms and will gather many family and friends together for this project. Thank you @ SamBuck for providing the information of where to send and especially leecytx for creating the swap.

leecytx 08/30/2010 #

Holocaust Museum Houston is producing a video about our Butterfly Project. Has your group participated? If so, do you have photos or high-resolution (digital) video of your group or exhibit in action. We'd love to see it for possible inclusion in our video. Send to Ira Perry, Holocaust Museum Houston, 5401 Caroline St., Houston, TX 77004 or email a link to a downloadable file to iperry@hmh.org.

cfchai 10/19/2010 #

Must the butterfly be made of paper or can it be other material?

leecytx 10/27/2010 #

butterfly can be made out of anything except things listed above & must be no bigger than the size requirement listed above as well. (sorry for delay on replying @cfchai
