Last day to signup/drop:September 12, 2010
Date items must be sent by:September 19, 2010
Number of swap partners:3
Description:

In this swap, you will write a letter to three people explaining your spiritual philosophy: in other words, do you believe in God? If so, why, in what form, how has this affected your life? If not, why not, and how has not believing in God affected your life?

Please note that I am using the term God very loosely. I do not, myself, adhere to any major religion and am definitely not preaching or proselytizing. Neither should you.

DO:

  • Be open-minded and willing to consider someone else's point of view.
  • Talk about man's place in the universe
  • Talk about what happens after death
  • Talk about whether or not there is a higher power
  • Talk about how the higher power relates to man
  • Talk about how your spitiruality, or lack thereof, has affected your life
  • Examine what you believe
  • Talk about why you believe what you do
  • Compare established religions and talk about which of their ideas fit with yours.
  • Feel free to talk about sin, karma, or anything else involving religious taboos.
  • Politely respond to your partners, asking more questions, comparing your views

DO NOT:

  • Be hateful, close-minded, or condemnatory (i.e. "I saw from your profile you're left-handed. Try to change that or you'll burn in the fiery pit of hell").
  • Attempt to preach or recruit others to your belief system. These letters should be introspective, ie the focus should be on what you believe, not on what others should or should not believe.
  • Smack-talk other religions. You don't know what your partner believes. Try not to be offensive. "Some of the major Western religions seem too dogmatic and un-accepting to me" is OK. "Christians are a bunch of bigoted Republicans" is NOT OK.

You will send three paper letters, one to each of three partners. For a 5, write at least one thoughtful page. Since you're sending out three copies of the same letter, I'd recommend typing it up and printing it out, but you can hand-write it if you want. There's no limit on how much you can write.

This is my first swap, so if you have any questions or if I'm doing something horribly wrong, let me know!

wonderful idea :) watching for now

So beyond the initial letter sent, we are encouraged to keep in touch and engage our partners, comparing views and asking more questions? This sounds like an interesting swap. =)

You're absolutely encouraged to respond to the letters you get, and to keep in touch! This is all about exploring your beliefs. Someone else might ask a question about an aspect of your beliefs you'd never really considered before, because they're looking at it from a different angle. Or maybe you'll read something that you really connect with... feel free to write back asking for more information!

Quoted from description:

"Since you're sending out three copies of the same letter, I'd recommend typing it up and printing it out, but you can hand-write it if you want."

So yes, printed is definitely OK! =)

gosh! I am not sure how I missed that one! Thanks for humoring an unobservant one!

PepperDust 09/ 6/2010 #

I wrote a long description, it's easy to miss. I know when i read descriptions I usually just scan for swap info and signup requirements.

my printer is not functional at the moment, and I prefer to handwrite my letters anyhow. would it be ok to send a photocopied handwritten letter? a portion of the letter would be tailored to each of my partners.

PepperDust 09/ 7/2010 #

That's fine, happylilartist. Whatever makes it easiest for you to get your thoughts out.

I am not a Christian. I just hope the people i send to do not judge me too hrashly for my views.

vidaest 09/19/2010 #

I'm sending this tomorrow morning! my printer is broken and I had to improvise!

Swan 09/20/2010 #

I'm looking forward to your letter @ElizabethObviously This swap is about being open minded to learning another one's point of view, so you shouldn't have to fear to be judged harshly unless you did do any of the things the swap rules say not to do :) You might get a lot of questions back, though, if your views are a lot different from your partners'.
