Historical Fiction Books I Wrote

About Me

Hi everyone! Greetings from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.

Thank you for reading my profile. I guess I could describe myself as 95 percent nerd and 5 percent hippie. ;)

In 2024, a longtime dream came true when I wrote and self-published a book! It is a 60ish page well-researched historical fiction novella inspired by real people and events of the 1800s in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. It is paperback and best suited for adult and teen readers. PM for info and/or if you would like to order a copy.

I've been on swap-bot for years and before that swapped through the group Nervousness. I'd rather do a few swaps that are special than lots of quick swaps.

After many years, it was time to update and spice up the old profile with an A-Z list of favorite things; here we go. I am conflicted about it now though. It seemed like my old long profile paragraphs were outdated. A list is quicker, more fun, and more informative; but I don't want it to seem like a gimme list. I like lots of things and appreciate many things.

Favorite Crafts

I crochet blankets for charity, make earrings, bead necklaces, cross-stitch, color, and collage.

Other Stuff (dislikes)

About the only things I don't like are dogs (sorry), monkeys, rustic country style crafts that are really factory-made, and cig smoke. I like wool a lot but cannot have it next to my skin like in a scarf or gloves. It gets all itchy. Also, please no sugar-free sweets or gum. Those artificial sugars do a number on my tummy.

A Poem and Owls

Here is a bit of a poem I like.

The moon-bird's head is filled with nothing but thoughts of the moon and when the next rain will come is all the rain-bird thinks of. Who is it we spend our entire life loving?

~Kabir~

You know what are awesome? Owls!!! I like the cartoonish owls that are in style now and have also had the chance to interact with some live owls! There was a beautiful snowy owl in my area of Virginia one winter! He was quite the local celebrity! I also attended an event where scientists banded the tiny Eastern saw-whet owls. And, I got to hold a tiny owl before it was released!

Favorite Books

I read lots of non-fiction and enjoyed The Beast in the Garden about pumas in residential areas and The Devil in the White City about the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.

As fun as they are, I already have enough books with household hints and craft instructions. Thanks for thinking of me if you were thinking of sending one but I think someone else could make better use of it at this time.

Vegan and vegetarian cookbooks are always welcome as are quirky nonfiction books printed by smaller presses or sold by small distributors.

Comment: Dear Changeling, thank you very much for your wonderful swap! :-) The story was truly scary and I loved the goosebumbs you gave me with it, especially as I saw Molly Malone last september, when I went to Ireland for vacation. I even stayes a while near her statue, as I found a nice pub with free spots to sit outside and while I drank ginger beer and had seafood, I watched how many people took a picture with her, often having their hands an her breast and laughing... and I hated, that not even a statue is safe of this behavior. - So while I was reading the ghost story, I had her picture in my mind. :-) Have a great week. Yours, Maxi
Response: Thanks! The story was fun to write. I made it all up. :) But wouldn't the Molly Malone statue coming to life and dealing with those people be great? That is really fun that you got to see the actual statue last year!

Comment: Thanks for the wildlife letter and the extras! I enjoyed reading about the wildlife you have around your place. We have hummingbirds that come in the summer and they remember where I put the feeder and if it isn't out, they fly to my window and look in the house to see if I am going to feed them! One year, they pecked at the hanger that was there, but it had no feeder on it yet. They are very inquisitive birds! I have only seen one fox all the time we've lived here, but I know they are around. I saw two coyotes during the day, but that was only once. At night they get all wound up and run around everywhere. Our neighbors' dogs get very excited, but don't chase them. We have robins that come through our yard in the spring and back through when they are flying south. I guess it's a good place to fuel up for their trip. Thanks for this swap! I liked it a lot! Thanks for the stamps!!
Response: Thanks! That's cute about the hummingbirds checking in on their food. They are clever! Thank you for being in this swap. I also though it was a lot of fun!

Comment: Thank you so much for this fascinating read! I had heard if some of them, or variations thereof. And when I was younger we used to peel and apple or an orange, and if you got the peel off without breaking it you'd throw it over your shoulder and then turn and look at the shape it made and it would supposedly show the first initial of your future partner's name - just like you said!

Comment: Thank you so much for the lovely Halloween package! I absolutely love the classic pumpkin pail, I intend to decorate it and use it to store some items while crafting. The treats were very delish. The pin and ring are awesome, canโ€™t wait to try the teas too. I love all the little things included and I can definitely use the hand towel. Thanks for joining my swap!
